ANNOUNCEMENTS

SSHRC's New Program Architecture

SSHRC is making important changes to its program architecture and they invite our feedback. Some of these changes will have important consequences for the funding of research in linguistics. In the view of a number of linguists who have studied the proposal, some of these changes are negative, and we should let our views be known to SSHRC and to the U of T. Here are some relevant documents:

• Department of Linguistics Response, final draft (75 KB).

This response was prepared by Diane Massam, and approved at the Department meeting on March 26. After the meeting Diane made some revisions to take account of comments in the meeting, and two further small changes were suggested by Jack Chambers. This response was submitted to SSHRC on March 31.

Fall 2009: Preparations and reference documents

The Faculty of Arts and Science is undertaking major planning this year to set the direction for the next five years. Here are the main documents:

• The Academic Planning Template we are to use to produce our report. We must submit a report maximum 8 pages due on December 15, 2009 (80 KB).

• Academic Planning in the Faculty of Arts & Science 2009-2014, from the Dean, October 2, 2009 (124 KB). Our report should take into account the goals and direction set out in this document.

The above documents should be read alongside the following:

• Towards 2030 Synthesis Report.
• the Provost's recent report University of Toronto: Academic Planning in the Context of Towards 2030.
• the 2008 report of the External Review of the Faculty of Arts & Science, and the decanal response to this review (88 KB).
• the Final Report of the Curriculum Review and Renewal Committee 2006-2007 (200 KB).
• The membership of the Faculty's Strategic Planning Committee. This is the committee that will read our report (36 KB).

DEAN'S OUTSTANDING STAFF AWARDS (revised April 14, 2010)

Mary Hsu is the winner of the 2008-2009 Dean's Student Life Award. The award committee writes that they were very impressed with Mary's work over the years as Graduate Administrator. The award was presented at a ceremony April 22, 2009 at Hart House. Congratulations, Mary!

Here is the memo that is sent to all faculty showing how the various items on their annual report have been scored. This memo gives the detailed scoring system used, in keeping with the general policies outlined in the above document. The scores are based on the system devised by former Chair Peter Reich, with revisions proposed by the 2009-2010 PTR Review Committee, consisting of Diane Massam (Chair), Michela Ippolito, and Ron Smyth.Download document (246KB)
