Graduate Student Funding

Please refer to http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/graduate/graduate-education/faqs# for information about increases to guaranteed funding for graduate students in 2016-17. The information below applies to 2015-16 guaranteed funding, and will be updated shortly.

Guaranteed Funding 2015-16

The Department of Linguistics guarantees financial support packages of at least $15,000 plus tuition and fees to eligible doctoral-stream students for up to five years of study (1 year at the MA level and 4 years in the PhD program).

This funding package may be made up from a variety of sources including external awards such as SSHRC, OGS, or CGS scholarships, research assistantships, teaching assistantships and other U of T funding. For further information please visit the School of Graduate Studies website.

All funded graduate students receive an individual funding letter that outlines the guaranteed funding that will be provided by the department as well as any known additional funding (e.g. extra TA hours); however, the letter may not capture extra RA and TA work that students secure independently in other departments.

Sample funding calculation for a domestic MA student in 2015 (guaranteed funding $23,449):

UTF

$17,250.00

TA hours (140)

6,199.00

$24,449.00

Tuition/fees deducted (from UTF/award payments)

8,448.80

$16,001.20

Sample funding calculation for an international MA student in 2015 (guaranteed funding $36,551):

UTF

$30,352.00

TA hours (140)

6,199.00

Guaranteed funding

$36,551.00

Admission Award/Extra funding from other sources

$37,551.00

Tuition/fees deducted (from UTF/award payments)

21,540.08

$16,001.92

There are many factors that can influence the total funding a student receives, including departmental top-up awards for major award recipients, extra TA hours, admission awards, and additional funding from other sources.  As noted above, the guaranteed funding amount includes tuition/fees. This amount is paid to the student, and tuition/fees are deducted from UTF/award payments (September, January and May). After deductions for tuition/fees the total guaranteed funding will be no less than $15,000.

External Scholarships

Graduate students are expected to apply for external funding such as the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctorate Fellowships and Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) for both MA and PhD.

Connaught Scholarships

This scholarship is valued at $15,000 plus academic fees. There is no citizenship requirement for the Connaught Scholarships or the U of T Fellowships. All awards are granted by the individual departments on the basis of academic excellence. Award recipients are formally notified, normally in the late spring.

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the MA and PhD levels.

An Ontario Graduate Scholarship is awarded for one academic year, which may consist of two or three consecutive terms. One-term awards are not granted. The value of the OGS is $5,000 per term. Thus, you may receive $10,000 for two consecutive terms or $15,000 for three consecutive terms. The province of Ontario contributes two-thirds of this amount and the university provides one-third.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC)

SSHRC is Canada's federal funding agency for university-based research and graduate training in the social sciences and humanities. Created as an independent body by Parliament in 1977, it reports to Parliament through the Minister of Industry.

SSHRC offers two types of funding for graduate students: Doctoral Fellowships (PhD students only) and Canada Graduate Scholarships (PhD and MA students). Doctoral Fellowships are valued at $20,000 per annum for 12, 24, 36, or 48 months. CGS Doctoral Scholarships are valued at $35,000 per annum for 36 months, and CGS Master's Scholarships are valued at $17,500 for 12 months.

Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada may apply for and receive SSHRC funding.
